New Book for Deacons in the Black Baptist Church

Deacon in Today's Black Church

Pastor, professor, and author Marvin A. McMickle takes a 21st century look at a first century ministry in his forthcoming book, Deacons in Today's Black Baptist Church (Judson Press, August 2010, $16). He explores the scriptural basis and historical context for the ministry of deacons, and considers the practical issues that bring this ministry to a crossroads today.

The book explores the following matters:

McMickle also offers insights from a recent survey to determine how the work of the deacon is understood in 44 Baptist congregations across the country. This practical and insightful resource concludes with a series of profiles of deacons of various ages, from various churches, and with diverse life experiences. Through their voices and perceptions readers will gain added insight into the roles and responsibilities of Deacons in Today's Black Baptist Church.

Marvin A. McMickle, DMin, PhD, is pastor of Antioch Baptist Church in Cleveland, OH, where he has served since 1987. One of the most respected preachers in the nation, he was named recipient of the 2006 Ralph Garfield Schell Presidential Award for Excellence in Ministry. In addition to his pastorate, McMickle serves as professor of homiletics at Ashland Theological Seminary. This is his ninth Judson Press book.

However, if you are intrigued by the idea of working together with others in your church to achieve spiritual growth, vision development, and community impact, check out the Retool Kit Pathway on the Region website.
