Edward Thawnghmung Receives Battle Creek Enquirer George Award

Edward and Annie Thawnghmung
More than 100 people packed the fellowship area of First Baptist Church of Battle Creek to celebrate the bestowal of the prestigious Battle Creek Enquirer George Award on Edward Thawnghmung. The award recognizes those who have made a significant difference in their community.
As a member of First Baptist Church of Battle Creek and as President of the Burmese Christian Fellowship, as well as through his work with Lutheran Social Services, Thawngmung has helped hundreds of refugees flee Burma and resettle in the Battle Creek community .
Nearly 30 years ago in December of 1980, Edward himself, his wife Annie, and their seven children fled the harsh conditions and oppressive regime of the ruling military junta. With the help and support of the First Baptist Church of Battle Creek, the Thawnghmungs made the perilous 8,000 mile journey to Battle Creek.
Since that time, Edward has spoken out about human rights abuses and has worked tirelessly to help others make the journey to freedom and start a new life. Never forgetting whence he came, Edward sacrifices time, energy, and resources to help those still in need.
One of his newest projects is the support of an orphanage, the Lal Vum Children’s Home, named after his father. Located in northern Burma (now called Myanmar) this orphanage cares for the most vulnerable, children who have lost homes and families. What they haven’t lost is hope, which is kept alive through the support of Edward and many others whom he has drawn together.
When asked why he sacrifices so much, Edward responds. ‘Our economic situation here in Michigan is bad, but our faith calls us to remember those who are in much worse situations.” Says his pastor, the Rev. David Laisum, “His kind of spirit and sacrifice is what our community needs. Our Christian faith calls us to constantly reach out to those in need beyond our walls sharing and showing God’s love.”
Indeed, Edward, his family, and the growing community of the First Baptist Church of Battle Creek are a visible sign of God’s love at work in Battle Creek and beyond. For more about Thawnghmung see this blog entry.

Improve the E-Link Reader Experience
About 1 in 5 E-Link readers view it by using an obsolete web browser, Microsoft's Internet Explorer 6. IE6 is 8 years old -- an eternity in tech time -- and does not play nicely with modern web page features. Text, pictures, movies, and slideshows may display poorly or not at all on IE6. (Many Facebook functions don't work in IE6.)
The Editor strongly encourages anyone still using IE6 to obtain a free download of Internet Explorer 8 (the current version) or other free browsers such as Firefox, Safari, and Chrome. IE8 is available for Windows XP and Vista at http://www.microsoft.com/upgrade/. Firefox is available at http://www.mozilla.com/en-US/firefox/firefox.html. Safari for Windows may be downloaded at http://www.apple.com/safari/. Google's new Chrome lives at http://bit.ly/srqj. Any one of these up to date browsers will give you much better performance and the added benefit of greatly improved protection from computer viruses, worms, and malware.
If you haven't the faintest idea what the previous paragraph is about or what to do about it, please contact the Editor at editor@abc-mi.org. He'll be glad to assist you.

Leadership Training at Battle Creek

The First Baptist Church of Battle Creek recently hosted a leadership training event. More than 25 leaders and emerging leaders within the congregation were led by pastors Rev. David Laisum and Rev. Ross Lucas as well as ABC-MI consultant Rev. Patricia Hernandez. The group met over the course of two Saturdays, exploring what it means to be a healthy leader and healthy congregation as well as discerning God’s particular mission and vision for First Baptist Church of Battle Creek.
Those who gathered drew upon the book of Acts as well as Paul’s letter to the Ephesians to reflect on what it means to receive the outpouring of the Holy Spirit in order to grow as leaders and cultivate a vibrant community that gives witness to God in Jerusalem, Judea, and Samaria, in Battle Creek and beyond. If you are interested in exploring what it means to be a healthy congregation and a healthy leader, resources and support are available through the Region office.
